Our Origin and Mission

Put It In A Book symbolizes a time in history when African Americans were not permitted to tell their own stories. Sanctions were in place that prohibited blacks from reading or writing, thus keeping them enslaved both physically and intellectually. And so, the saying went, if you wanted to hide something from a black person, Put It In A Book.

What was meant to damage a group, can be used to uplift a community. So, here we are. An open book, ready to educate the community about the in-betweens of history. Our mission is to provide a platform for ALL voices, leverage resources to create literary spaces, and fill in the gaps for the underserved. We believe in equitable representation and that ALL stories be told!

Right to Read

We work with high school librarians, teachers and administrators to create on-campus book clubs in high schools while providing free banned and challenged books to help encourage freedom of thought and critical thinking skills.

H.O.S.T. Program

H.O.S.T. means Honoring Our Students and Teachers. We host author visits at Title 1 schools and gift signed books to all students in attendance.  It’s a holistic approach to literacy. Children see, hear, and experience Black authors. They see themselves represented in person, in stories, and in life. It gives them exposure to know that writing or illustrating can be a career choice and with the gifted book, allows them to share at home and create a personal library.
